Intellectual Disablilities

The term intellectual disabilities is used to describe a child that has limitations set with mental functioning, communicating, taking care of himself/herself and social skills. With these factors a child will be learning at a slower pace then the typical child. This diagnosis could happen due to genetic problems, problems during pregnancy, problems at birth and health problems. This is not a disease, it is a disability.
Three out of one hundred people in our country have an intellectual disability. in fact one out of every ten children with special needs has an intellectual disability. Signs range from anything like; sitting or walking later then others to having trouble thinking.
An IEP will be made for this child and work on it with the parent and teacher. Many if their skills can be put to work at home also.

Down syndrome

Down syndrome is one of the easiest chromosomal defects that there is to detect. This is caused by an accident cell in the developmental results. It is an added chromosome that does not belong and that extra chromosome distributes the normal order of development in the brain and body. nto all times does it end this way but more then normal. About 4,000 children are diagnosed with this disease every year in the U.S. Yet it is not common in women of a certain age they face a higher risk after age 35. If a family is blessed with one down syndrome child it is not possible for it to happen again.
There are over fifty signs to look for but you may only find a couple in one person, never all of them will be found. Some examples are: poor muscle tone, slanting eyes, hyperflexibility, flat bridge of nose and much much more. Children with down syndrome are ussually smaller then their peers, and will be intellectually slower.
As a teacher you can not set limitations on a child because they are smart and need to learn how to apply it. Set concrete concepts for them to learn and you are in the clear.

Cerebal Palsy

Cerebal Palsy is a condition caused by injury to parts of the brain that control our ability to use our muscles and bodies. About 500,000 people in the United States. and 8,000 babies are born with it every year. With early and onging treatment the CP can be reduced. there are three types of treatment that CP children can go through: physical, occupational, speech-language pathology, all of these working with a different part of the body. it depends what part if the brain was injured.
Going to school for a cerebal palsy child stages some difficulty. they most likely need individualized help. meaning a one on one learning enviroment. Services are provided to the child and family for cerebal palsy and an IEP will be made on the child. Twho techniques are used with CP children such as; communication devices and computer technology.
as a teacher remember to tap into strategies that will work on CP students,be inventive, and also teh parents are the experts . If you can not get the child to work with you give the parents a call they probably know how to fix it or what to do!
